Description

Over the past years, the population of desert lions has increased significantly in the region of the Skeleton Coast, Namibia. This is due to the enormous efforts and hard work of the Desert Lion Conservation Project. The main threat for the lions are unfortunately still the human-wildlife conflicts. Locals are still afraid of the lions and don’t hesitate to kill them when they come too close.

To minimise these conflicts, the project has set up an early warning system. Thanks to this system the local communities are notified when a lion is approaching, giving them time to protect their stock. For this program to succeed, all lions need to be equipped with a specific collar designed for this cause. Specifically designed Live Satellite Lion Collars allow the researchers and rapid response teams to gain more insights in the movements and behaviour of the lions. In addition to activating the early warning system when they come close to local communities (like the normal collars do), these satellite collars enable continuous live tracking of the lion wherever he or she might be. This means that researchers can predict movements and warn the rapid response teams before a lion even reaches the communities!
